Dean gets it right

Lynn Sweet in the Chicago Sun Times, reporting on Howard Dean's weekend visit to the Rainbow/PUSH convention on Sunday:

Republicans want to demonize Dean, and his "white, Christian'' remark seems to only highlight the success the GOP has had within the evangelical community.

To counter this, Sunday afternoon, Dean talked about the Bible, Jesus, respecting people who disagree with you and the persuasive power of deep convictions.

It came out right.

"Let me remind those Republicans,'' he said, that the Bible mentions helping the poor "3,000 times. I have not yet seen gay marriage mentioned in the Bible. That is a Republican issue.''

Have you ever read the Bible? You must not have. By agreeing with Howard Dean's remarks you are showing you are either a liar who has read the Bible but chose to misrepresent it on purpose or you are ignorant of the Bible, have never really read it, and are now acting like you know what it says.

The Bible has much to say about giving to the poor. I agree that giving is good. But what the Bible teaches is that it's the families (not the government’s) responsibility to care for the poor or elderly. It teaches that if the family can't, that churches should. Jesus never gave that responsibility to the government. He gave it to that families and individuals and churches.

I do that myself. I give 15% of all I make away to charity. Does Screamin Dean? No, look at his charitable giving records. He is a hypocrite to talk about what the Bible has to say about giving and then not do it. By the way, can you even list 10 of the 3000 places the Bible tells Christians to use the government to help the poor?

And also, the Bible has a whole lot to say about marriage. It is Genesis and again Jesus in the gospels who define marriage as one man with one woman for life. Haven’t you read it?

Matthew 19: 4-6 "Haven’t you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

And the Bible has much to say about homosexuality. Here is a small sample of what it teaches.

1 Corinthians 6:9 -10 “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Leviticus 18:22 “‘Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”

Leviticus 20:13 "‘If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.”

Romans 1: 25-27 “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator— who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”

Genesis 19:4 -5 “Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom— both young and old— surrounded the house. They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them."

Jude 1:7 “In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.”

If you don’t believe the Bible, fine. But don’t misrepresent what it teaches. It teaches that care for the poor should happen in the private sector and that homosexuality is a perverted and detestable sin against God’s plan for marriage.

I was sexually immoral in my past, and I can testify to the grace of God and how he will forgive and help you conquer your addiction to sexual perversion. I thank God for his mercy to forgive us when we repent and change our lifestyle.
