The sliming of Cindy Sheehan, Chapter 2

McBride joins the McCarthyism revival

Joseph Welch, left, asks Sen. Joseph McCarthy: "Have you no decency?"

The Republican effort to discredit Cindy Sheehan, the grieving mother who lost a son in Iraq, knows no bounds. As her lonely vigil begins to look like the beginnning of a real anti-war movement, the anti-Sheehan rhetoric gets more shrill and the attacks get more vicious.

WTMJ Radio's Charlie Sykes was one of the first to spread the red-baiting of Sheehan, doing his best Joe McCarthy imitation to try to link her to Communists, as I reported here and here last week.

Today, Jessica McBride joins the McCarthyism Squad, relying on Slimemeister Drudge for this Six Degrees of Separation smear of Sheehan:

Among the organizations aligned with Sheehan in Crawford is a group called Code Pink and one of its leaders, radical activist Medea Benjamin, who once praised living in Communist Cuba as "heaven." Sheehan has openly written on her Web Site of the help from Code Pink. One Web Site says of Benjamin:

Many of the causes that Ms. Benjamin espouses are Communist in nature. For instance, most of the major anti-war demonstrations at which she has spoken were organized by the Workers World Party , a Marxist-Leninist organization that openly supports Kim Jong Il's dictatorship in North Korea and proudly proclaims its dedication to "fight[ing] against capitalism" in America's "racist, sexist society." In years past, she vehemently opposed U.S. military aid to those fighting against Communist forces in Central America. Passionately anti-capitalist, Benjamin is widely credited as a chief organizing force behind the 1999 Seattle riots in which 50,000 protesters did millions of dollars worth of property damage in their effort to
shut down meetings of the World Trade Organization. During the last week of December 2004, Benjamin announced in Amman, Jordan that Global Exchange, Code Pink, and Families for Peace would be donating a combined $600,000 in medical supplies and cash to the terrorist insurgents who were fighting American troops in Fallujah, Iraq.

I don't use the McCarthy comparison lightly. It is not a term I throw around. But in this case it is entirely appropriate. The tactics and techniques of guilt by association are all too familiar. What's going on is McCarthyism, pure and simple. Matt Rothschild at The Progressive has been posting some of the hateful rhetoric from right-wing Internet sites, which will turn your stomach.

I asked Sykes last week the famous question asked of Joe McCarthy: Have you no decency? He didn't respond or defend himself, although he reads this blog.

Jessica, it's your turn. Have you no decency?

How about a new phrase for this kind of smearing, cheap-shot conduct in honor of the son of Jay -- Charlie McCarthyism

Oh give it a rest. McCarthyism? You are becoming unglued with your Bush hatred. I think you need some time with Dr. Phil.

You need to take a lesson from Feingold. It is time to cut and run from Sheehan. She is unraveling with the passing of each day. You need a new anti-war mascot.

Read what the crazed lunatic has been yammering – do you really want to stand by this?

"We are not waging a war on terror in this country. We’re waging a war of terror. The biggest terrorist in the world is George W. Bush!"

"We are waging a nuclear war in Iraq right now. That country is contaminated. It will be contaminated for practically eternity now."

"They’re a bunch of fucking hypocrites! And we need to, we just need to rise up..." Sheehan said of the Bush administration.

"If George Bush believes his rhetoric and his bullshit, that this is a war for freedom and democracy, that he is spreading freedom and democracy, does he think every person he kills makes Iraq more free?"

"The whole world is damaged. Our humanity is damaged. If he thinks that it’s so important for Iraq to have a U.S.-imposed sense of freedom and democracy, then he needs to sign up his two little party-animal girls. They need to go to this war."

"We want our country back and, if we have to impeach everybody from George Bush down to the person who picks up dog shit in Washington, we will impeach all those people."

Ms. Sheenan -- not a professional, has a long way to go to equal the outrageousness of anyone on Fox, or Sykes on his worst day.

Certainly Ann Coulter makes anyone look sane.

Watch the press start to really go after Cindy as Nora O'Donnell did last night on Hardball -- http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8997294/.

Cindy is in for it but good. Imagine wanting to ask questions the "liberal media" doesn't have the guts to pose to our totally inept President.

For those fans of W who regard him as the leader we need to face terrorism, he doesn't have the courage -- or the poise for that matter -- talk to an ordinary citizen who asks the kinds of questions Tony Blair deals with on a routine basis.

Take out terrorism? With his ability at running a business he couldn't even take out a loan.

Bush hatred. Here's two words that cause siliva spewing out of your eye balls -- Hillary Clinton.

By the way, from some of those quote Cindy better watch it. She's starting swear like Cheney.

Xout's quotes above were lifted directly, in their entirety, from the same Drudge Report McBride relied on.

Thanks for sharing.

Wait a second. Whereas, conservatives are habitual liars, how do we know if Cindy actually said these things?

On the other hand, if she really did, I think there should be some allowance for a language towards someone who contributed to the death of her child by not thinking this thing through and is too egotistical to admit the mistake -- and the lies behind that mistake.

At least Cindy has the guts to stand up for herself and her family, probably fully aware of the slimming to come from these poor examples of politicians and press.

They came from Cindy - who cares where they came from. The point stands. The woman is a nutcase and is a very poor choice of a mascot. Can't you guys do any better?

Thankfully it's over. Cindy finally went home. Hopefully she will seek the counseling and help she so desperately needs.

Believe it or not, no one recruited Cindy. Just like her son, she is a volunteer who is doing what se believes is right.

It's too bad you have to make every attack personal against whoever you disagree with. I don't call you names.

There is plenty of room for disagreement without hatred. She is neither a nutcase or a mascot. She lost a son in a misguided war, and she is in some distress. If you really think she is a nutcase who needs professional help, some compassion would be in order.

When someone runs out of arguments they turn to name calling.

Oh I am so very sorry if I offended someone. I will try to use the same civil, respectful and considerate tone that Cindy has so admirably demonstrated. I won't even use labels like McCarthyism... I won't resort to name calling.

Glad to oblige.

McCartyism is smearing a person's reputation with unfounded charges of disloyalty, subversion or being under Communist influences, often relying on guilt by association.

McBride and Sykes have both practiced it in their attacks on Cindy Sheehan.
