'We will stay, we will fight, we will vacation'

"An immediate withdrawal of our troops in Iraq, or the broader Middle East, as some have called for, would only embolden the terrorists and create a staging ground to launch more attacks against America and free nations," he said. "So long as I'm the president, we will stay, we will fight, and we will win the war on terror." -- President Bush.

So there you have it. How long will Americans continue to fight and die in Iraq? As long as George Bush is president.

Not sure where he gets the "we" part. It would be more accurate to say, as he did the other day, that "So long as I'm the president, I will have lunch with Secretary of State Rice, talk a little busines; Mrs. Bush, talk a little business; we've got a friend from South Texas here, named Katharine Armstrong; take a little nap. I'm reading an Elmore Leonard book right now, knock off a little Elmore Leonard this afternoon; go fishing with my man, Barney; a light dinner and head to the ballgame. I get to bed about 9:30 p.m., wake up about 5 a.m., so it's a perfect day."

Wonder who it is, exactly, that is calling for "an immediate withdrawal of our troops in Iraq." Apparently it's not his man Barney or Katharine Armstrong, and we sure as hell know it's not Secretary Rice.

You know XOff - I think it is time for you to take a bit of a break yourself. But please don't take a whole month - liberalism in Wisconsin may be in jeapordy.

Actually, I am on a lake in north central Wisconsin as I write. Thanks for your concern.

Go figure – you can be on vacation and still keep track of things. Who would have known that vacation doesn’t have to get in the way of doing your job? Oh, wait, that would be you.

I could be wrong, but I don't think posting a few blog items a day is equivalent to running the country. But, hey, what do I know?

Yeah. You do know better. The White House goes wherever the President is. It has done so for decades – even when the technology was lacking – it worked. Today, there is no need for the President to huddle down in a single room of the White House for the entire term of his presidency. We aren’t relying on two tin-cans and a long string here.

As I have reminded you before – had Johnson left the building during Vietnam and stopped micro-managing the war in Vietnam – it likely would have gone better. Carter never left during the Iran hostage crisis and it solved nothing. They were freed when a strong President was elected.

Bush being away from the enclave for a month has no affect on the war or any other detail of federal government and you know it.

In fact if a President Kerry had spent a month in Martha’s Vineyard, you wouldn’t even notice.
