Sykes undecided on gay marriage vote

UPDATE: Dennis York outs Sykes as King of the RINOs. York's kidding, but others are not happy about Sykes straying a little from the flock.

UPDATE 2:
Rumble on the right.

Republican radio's Charlie Sykes says he is undecided on the amendment to ban gay marriages and civil unions.

One of the nagging questions he's wrestling with:
Exactly how does allowing gays to enter into legal, monogamous relationships undermine the institution of marriage? Isn’t in society’s interest to foster and recognize such stable relationships? And why would that be something that conservatives would oppose?
An excellent question. Let's hope Charlie comes down on the right correct side of this one.

(The column, you'll note, appears in Isthmus, Madison's alternative weekly. Let's hope we see it in his column in the CNI suburban papers, too.)

One still wonders why conservatives have waited until after this atrocity passed in the Legislature to begin voicing their concerns.

I find it hard to believe they care one way or another.

Rather, the fact that the vote occurs simultaneously with the election of a new governor and is expected to energize the Republican base to vote, sounds more realistic than caring conservatives suddenly discovering the color lavender isn't so bad.

ita amazing even when some of us come out and say we are against the this amendment we are said to be lying or we dont really care. A number of Conservative bloggers came out on record against this months ago.

Then you wonder why we will not work with the you people on the left, even when we agree on an issue you find time to attack us.

fine other side you cannot defeat this without Conservative help(if it can be defeated at all) and attitudes like yours will really make conservatives who are on the fence want to rally to help your cause Jack ass

Chris, you came out some time ago against this and that's fine...as did a few others such as Dean, Wiggie, etc. However, you cannot deny that there are those that are now using this merely for political expediency.

Let's please leave the name calling out of the discussion, if you can manage.

There haven't been many conservative people coming out against the ban, but I believe that the ones who do get overlooked. The pro-ban people certainly don't want dissent shown on their side and the anti-ban people aren't paying attention. I've read numerous letters to the editor (not in my right-wing crappy paper here in Racine) but in other papers around the state that start off, I'm a Republican but or I'm conservative but and they go on to say their against the ban.

Those are the Republicans and Conservatives I respected as a child. I just wish the rest of the party were more like them. (Despite what Mr. Sykes believes, the Republicans have been overtaken by the fringe, wingnuts, as he called them.)

For the record, I haven't come out against the ban. I just have a lot of unanswered questions. And I mean a lot. Like a whole bunch. So if someone wants to convince me without calling me a right-wing gay-bashing homophobic sexually insecure fascist Nazi wingnut, I'd like to see the case made.

It's wrong. That's the only reason you need.

And, no one is calling you what you listed above. But thousands upon thousands who call themselves conservatives or have allied with conservatives HAVE said worse and have agreed to vote for the amendment because of fear (of what?), hate, and homophobia.

The problem for me is I have seen few if any conservatives take PUBLIC stances on the wrongness of this amendment. Those who are doing so now were silent before the vote in the legislature, where this could have been stopped dead in its tracks. So, I'm left to believe that political expediency is at the heart of their conversion.

If you and some others are so insecure to think that you are being singled out, then too bad. This thing is likely going to pass and discrimination will be added to a document designed to delineate rights. That will be shameful and hateful legacy.

Well, that convinced me.

In response to what msnk said about Christians coming about against Sykes, did you know that many mainline churches in this state are formally against this amendment? Fair Wisconsin has a list here.
