Frank P. Zeidler, 1912-2006

Frank Zeidler, Milwaukee's last socialist mayor, who was the Socialist Party's candidate for president in 1976, has died at age 93.

Zeidler, who was mayor from 1948 to 1960, was a gentle, thoughtful man who never quit working for social justice and to improve the lives of the people of Milwaukee, the city he loved. He was an active participant in the community until his final days.

It is safe to say there will not be another like him.

Watch Amy Goodman's 2004 interview with him here.

For another example, he was a frugal Socialist.

Actually, frugality was one of the characteristics of the Milwaukee Socialist tradition: don't borrow what you don't have, because it makes the government vulnerable to the banks. It's one reason Milwaukee had a AAA bond rating, which didn't go away until after 20 years or so of Henry Maier.
