Doyle's "mainstream Republican" budget

It is a backhanded compliment, to be sure, but the Capital Times, a frequent critic of Gov. Jim Doyle, editorializes today in favor of sustaining Doyle's 139 budget vetoes.

The Cap Times basically says that Doyle did the best he could with what he had to present the legislature with a reasonable budget proposal -- one the paper calls "a mainstream Republican proposal in the tradition - if not the precise form - of those advanced by past governors such as Warren Knowles and Lee Sherman Dreyfus."

When the GOP-run legislature got through with it, it was a partisan budget filled with pork for special interests. The Cap Times had urged Doyle to veto the whole thing.

But Doyle's creative vetoes restored some sanity and fairness, leading the Cap Times to conclude:

[T]he vetoes the governor made have produced a better budget than the one he was handed by the Legislature. It is more in tune with Wisconsin values and, frankly, it is more in tune with mainstream Republican values.

Prediction: Those on the left looking for more reasons to pick a fight with Doyle, who's not liberal enough for them, will use the Cap Times "mainstream Republican" language against him.

I'm so sick of listening to the Douche-off bitch at the left for not giving a free pass to Doyle just because his parents had good values and there's a D next to his name. Doyle owes us BIG, and he had better work his ass off to earn our votes. Certainly, we won't be heading to the polls to re-elect the war-mongering corporatist closet-case. Perhaps with the Roberts nomination abortion will come to the front burner and motivate some, but a Green getting 8% means Doyle loses.

Unfortunately it is a Republicanesque budget but that is because the Republicans have learned to spend like drunken fools. Who cares if we can afford it, we'll just bond for it!!!!!

This state is going to float away on a sea of red ink.

Hey first anonymous, how about you recognize some of the accomplishments Doyle was able to do with this budget with a Republican Legislature. It's not like we can make this a progressive paradise when you have the rabid right hunting you down, there is something called compromise that you are forced to do. Oh, and how is the Governor war-mongering? He's not invading Illinois or anything.

The war-mongering comment must refer to the war against the taxpayers. Doyle and the legislature are both guilty of it.

That's too bad, I might have enlisted to invade Illinois.

Did you notice how Scott Walker's latest press release on the budget lists himself as the media contact? Something tells me that both Doyle and Green have press people that handle these things for them.

Dems who like to attack Doyle should ask themselves that they did to help win a majority in the legislature that he could work with. He's out there rather solo, isn't he?

I second that.

Good luck with the majority thing. Although Doyle has done a pretty good job of faking being a Republican which should at least help him hang on to his seat. Remember kiddies... you may be 'progressive', but your friends and neighbors think you are nuts. We are taked to death in Wisconsin, they know it and you are confused.

Is that why our tax ranking has been declining consistently over the past several years?

From #4 to #5. I don't know if that is anything to cheer about.
