Quote, unquote

"I do like John McCain a great deal. The thought of running against him would not be my idea of an easy task. I'm a big fan. "If he wins the Republican primaries, I think the chances of the Democrats winning the White House that year are going to be pretty thin. I think we all know that."

-- Sen. Russ Feingold, on whether McCain-Feingold could become the presidential race in 2008 instead of the title of a campaign reform bill.

So what's your point? That Senator Russ is an unloyal Democrat who dares to say something complementary about a dreaded Republican?

I too feel that Dems need to be more assertive when it comes to party advocacy. Lord knows they need national leaders who know how to fight for what they believe in.

But I find it difficult to fault Sen. Russ for this statement especially when the two of them have been through the proverbial trenches fighting to reform something that nobody thought could be reformed, namely, of course, Campaign Finance.

Now, that reform wasn't perfect and didn't go nearly far enough and it would never have passed if ENRON and the other excesses of a few years ago didn't give it a push.

That said, Russ and John have a mutual admiration society that is really remarkable. Obviously, they come from different political orientations but their independent natures are quite similar.

So good for Russ. I give him credit for saying something nice about a Republican and a friend. Is that so horrible?

Nose for news.

What was that about? I didn't say anything critical, just posted his quote without comment.

Nice job beating up on several straw men.

Uh, okay, you posted the quote without any intention of making a point?

Pardon me if I attributed an critical tone to your innocent post as in "there he goes again, Mr. Independent praising a Republican rather than making nice with his brethren".

I suppose you have the right to be shocked, shocked that anyone would jump to such a conclusion.

But there are Democratic party regulars who criticize Sen. Feingold for going off the reservation and not being a team player. Maybe that's news to you.
