Tommy will never say never
"Never say never" is one of the most overworked cliches among politicians, but Tommy Thompson has taken it to extremes. He is simply unable to admit that his political career is over. Yes, he hates Jim Doyle, but we've known that for 15 years or so. Does he dislike Mark Green and Scott Walker, too?
Running for President? Please. Didn't we all have to live through that once?
Tomm's really going to keep flying around like a madman and pocket his corporate millions until he collapses or has his heart attack (which his friends fear.) But he won't say that. Sunday's story:
He muses about running for governor against incumbent Democrat Jim Doyle this year. His antipathy for Doyle is plain. He condemns his performance as "awful," spelling out the word for effect: "A-W-F-U-L." Or running for the U.S. Senate against another incumbent Democrat, Herb Kohl, also on the ballot in November. Or even seeking the GOP presidential nomination in 2008.
His closest political associates won't predict what he'll do, especially in the governor's race, what with two Republicans already gunning for Doyle's job. Thompson said he could throw his hat in the ring as late as June, when the state GOP holds its annual convention.

Tommy would be good for Doyle. If they were the only two choices, I'd sit this one out. The thought of Doyle getting another term makes me want to wretch. The thought of another bout of Tommy is like the difference between the dry heaves and actually hurling. I apologize for being graphic, but there's no other way to describe the choices that is more apt.
I don't balme McCallum for the fiscal mess this state is in. I put that one on Tommy. We spend too much in this State and from my point of view, the Doylester in no better. After 2010, it won't matter to me as I'll have left my home state for greener pastures, as it were. Too bad. At one time, I used to brag about Wisconsin.
good lord, does anyone realize that if Tommy ran and won, there wouldn't be a square inch of this state left without asphalt covering it? Asphalt and dog tracks for as far as the eye could see!
The contrast between Thompson and Doyle makes for one of the most interesting comparisons of the modern political era.
Thompson has the reputation of being a classic back-slapping, crowd-working populist style pol. He campaigned as a conservative but was responsible for an enormous growth of state government including highway and building construction projects that would make Willie Stark blush.
Doyle has reigned in government spending and initiated vast improvements in the state's business climate. Yet his concerns for vulnerable members of society and successes against the "Wingnut Nation" drive conservatives crazy.
Yet both are battle hardened realpoliticniks who know how to win elections. Wouldn't you love to see a Extreme Boxing match between these two guys? It'd be fierce.
Anyway give me the Put People First Doyle anyday despite his green eye shades aura. But then again I've never been in a room with Tommy.
