Green speaks out on voting rights

Rep. Mark Green after passage of the Voting Rights Act extention:

“Forty-six years ago Congress closed a dark chapter in our nation’s history by passing legislation to extend voting rights to all America’s citizens. Today, my colleagues and I in the House renewed our commitment to preserving this fundamental right. As a cosponsor of the Voting Rights Act reauthorization, I was deeply honored to fight for this historic measure. Americans of all races, colors and ethnicities deserve to know that their right to vote will never be taken away, and I am bound and determined to protect that right.

"I will, however, do everything in my power to make it as difficult as possible for anyone with Democratic tendencies to vote in Wisconsin. Along with my friend Jim Sensenbrenner, and the Republicans in the state legislature, I will continue to try to impede the poor, minorities, and senior citizens from being able to cast their ballots. We will fight them in the courtrooms and in the Capitol, to require pieces of identification they either do not have or are likely not to have on their persons on Election Day.

"Lofty principles are one thing we can all agree on. But I'm trying to win an election."

UPDATE: Cory Liebmann asks why Wisconsin Reps. Paul Ryan and Tom Petri voted to eliminate bilingual ballots.

That just sucks that we would require to make some voting a piece of identification that we are required by law to carry. If a person is not able to get out of the house and obtain a photo ID, what makes them able to get out of the house and vote
