Feingold: No deal on Patriot Act

Bush and Company shouldn't pop the champagne cork just yet. Sen. Russ Feingold says the "compromise" on the Patriot Act consists of a few small changes, and he will do everything he can to defeat it as it stands.

But with virtually all 55 GOP senators now on board, and Democrats joining them, the plan appears to have enough support to overcome the Senate filibuster that has thwarted a four-year renewal of the statute for months. Senators said they think the White House will be able to coax the Republican-controlled House to agree as well, even though House leaders have complained that senators' demands had weakened the measure.

If it's not time to pop the cork yet, it is time to chill the champagne.

I guess Harry Reid's gloating about killing the Patriot Act was a bit premature. What a mistake! Perhaps he had other Abramoff related things on his mind.

If Feingold is serious about 2008, he has to start moving to the center. Being the darling of the Radical Left and fighting efforts to fight terror only serves to marginalize him. Feingold is out of the mainstream.
