Quote, unquote

"Iraqi citizens voted in ways that would make us jealous and embarrass us."
-- Rick Wiley of Wisconsin Republican Party.

OK, I'll bite. What ways were those?

The last part of Wiley's quote is the best:

"We're in pretty good shape over there with the newness of the democracy that we're helping the Iraqis create."

That's the only issue in Iraq? The "newness" of it all?

Perhaps the fact that Iraqi citizens risk life and limb, defy terrorist's bullets and bombs to vote for something they believe in because they never were able to is what Wiley meant. In this country when something like showing an ID to vote comes up, some people cry suppression instead of actually getting off thier butts to vote. What some call an obstacle other wouldn't even notice it as a pebble on the ground.

Okay, but bombs and bullets are remarkably non-partisan.

When a voter ID pogram can be shown to disproportionately disenfranchise one segment of voters in order to benefit one political party, it's vote manipulation.

Maybe since their votes actually counted?

Let's send them to Florida and Ohio, then.

How does it disenfranchise? ID programs that have been purposed have made ID's available at no cost which means it's not a financial burden. If you're immobile you can vote absentee. You will however have a problem if you're not a citizen or here illegally.

When did they outlaw the use of buses, cabs, bikes, scooters, rollerskates and feet? If they don't have DL's then how do they get to the store to buy food? If they want a beer, what ID do they show to purchase that beer? How do they cash checks? What about using the abesentee ballot? Soulja's Story, Point The Finga, Peep Game and Ladies Love..... Anything else? If that's what I would have to do to vote, I'll do it.

You don't have a right to drive or a right to drink beer. Consequently, identification is required. ID cards help to suppress the number of people who drive and drink. That is their function.

Voting is a right. ID cards would have the same effect on voting as on driving and drinking and that's where the difference is. ANY measure that might even remotely suppress voting is wrong.

Of course, that is the Republican goal.

What about the eating thing. If you don't eat you die. Nothing in life is free. Sometimes you actually have to get off the couch to accomplish something. Getting a free ID isn't too much to ask. Voting in a fair election is also a right that the CITIZENS of this country have and fraud is disenfranchising. Having an ID to prove that citizenship is not suppression.

But getting the illegals out of the polling places isn't the goal of Democrats.

Silent e ... we'll just have to disagree. Voting is a right. I do think getting an ID is too much to ask.

The fraud you speak of is nearly non-existent, unless you count the issues in Florida in 2000. Consequently the only ones practicing fraud on a large basis are Republicans. Perhaps we should have special IDs made just for them.

Isolated incidents here and there have been magnified to dramatic proportions by Republican talk-radio. And the citizenship argument is silly. We do not have waves of illegals turning out at polls to vote. It would be disastrous for them to do so since they would quickly be discovered and sent back.

Sorry, from this point of view, Republican attempts are still INTENTIONAL suppression of the vote.

You're right. Smoke for votes, the Kenosha nursing home, illegal registration, the guy that was caught for voting illegally. That stuff never happens. We're out to intentionally suppress votes. Ooops!! Don't forget to check you tires. Your arguements are lame and baseless. If the illegals don't vote, your base would substantially shrink.

As I said, isolated incidents all ... yours are the lame and baseless arguments.

Can anyone say Ohio and Diebold?

And your last comment about illegals is grade school.

Nothing. Send the memo to silent e.

Illegals are some of the biggest perpetrators of identity theft, but of course you probably didn't know that. About the Diebold thing. Your are talking about the logistics of the voting process during or after the ballot is cast. I'm referring to the people casting the ballot. Not the same.
