Now it can be told

Ragnar Mentaire is delighted by this:

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin wine drinkers received some good news Wednesday afternoon.

Gov. Doyle signed a bill Wednesday that makes it legal to carry unfinished bottles of wine that were part of a restaurant meal out of the establishment. An old state law prohibited that.

Doyle said he hopes the bill will reduce drunken driving by removing the pressure to finish off an expensive bottle rather than letting it go to waste.

What he didn't tell you was why Doyle signed the bill. If he had vetoed it, the Republicans were prepared to offer it as an amendment to the state constitution.

Now that it's on the books, will open beers be the next target?
